Homemade BBQ Beef Burger Recipe

I love summer because it’s BBQ season in southern Manitoba! There’s nothing like the scent of burgers grilling on the barbeque. Whenever my husband and I go for a walk and I smell the aroma of BBQ in the air, I take a deep breath, inhaling the sweet smoky scent, and sigh in satisfaction as my mouth begins to water.

If I could have a BBQ all year long, I would be so happy, but it’s not as pleasurable grilling burgers during the cold winter months. Perhaps that’s why I love BBQs so much in summer. Summer and BBQ are synonymous in my vocabulary.

I’m always on the hunt for a great-tasting beef burger. When I go to a restaurant, often my first choice is a burger if it’s on the menu. I even love fast food burgers, especially McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with cheese and A&W’s Teen or Mozza Burgers. These burgers rank fourth on my list of favourites. Perhaps I love these burgers because I have fond childhood memories of picnics in the park with my parents (with McDonald’s cheeseburgers in our picnic basket) and lunches at A&W with my grandparents.

Denny’s Bourbon Bacon Cheeseburger ranks in third place for my favourites. It’s loaded with sautéed mushrooms, onions and peppers and the sweet taste of bourbon BBQ sauce with crispy strips of bacon. The second best burger I have ever eaten was from a small Sri Lankan restaurant near where I live which makes fantastic cheeseburgers and fries with the most amazing dipping sauce.

The reason I rank this Sri Lankan burger in second place is because it tastes almost identical to my own homemade burger recipe which has been my favourite burger since I made it for the first time. Well, technically, it’s my mom’s recipe, but I have always loved my mom’s home-cooked burgers more than anywhere else.

So what’s the secret to making a great-tasting burger?

Well… there are two secret ingredients actually: Bullseye Hickory Smoked BBQ Sauce and Onion Soup Mix.

The Bullseye BBQ sauce isn’t just a condiment. When mixed directly into the ground beef, the burger stays juicy during cooking, not to mention that the hickory smoked flavor mixed with the onion soup mix makes the most delicious seasoning.

Give it a try yourself and let me know what you think!

Burger Ingredients

One pound of lean ground beef

One package of Onion Soup Mix, any brand

Your favourite barbeque sauce, to taste*

*Bullseye Hickory Smoked BBQ Sauce is my favourite or try Bullseye Honey Garlic BBQ Sauce

Burger Preparation Directions

1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine ground beef and onion soup mix.

2. Add as little or as much BBQ sauce as you like; however, note that the more BBQ sauce you add, the less the burgers will stick together during cooking. I recommend adding no more than ¼ cup per pound of ground beef.

3. Mix all ingredients well.

4. Scoop approximately ¼ cup of ground beef into a burger press and press down (or add as much or as little beef to the burger press as desired, depending on the size of burger you prefer).

*Tip: I purchased my burger press from Dollar Tree for $1.25. If you don’t have your own burger press, roll the ground beef into a ball and flatten with your hands.

5. Press the ground beef until it won’t press down further. Then gently lift the press, rotating slightly to keep the burger intact.

6. Separate the beef from the sides of the press with a butter knife. Then turn over onto a plate or cookie sheet lined with wax paper and tap gently until the burger falls out.

7. Refrigerate until ready to grill or store in an airtight container and freeze for later use.

*Tip: Freeze the burgers in a single row first before stacking them together, otherwise they will be difficult to separate once frozen.

Grill Directions

1. Preheat the barbeque and clean the grill prior to adding the burgers.

2. Turn the heat down to medium low and grill burgers for approximately 8-10 minutes per side for a well-done burger.

*Note: if you prefer your burgers on the rarer side, adjust the grill time accordingly; however, ensure you follow standard food safety protocols to prevent food poisoning.

*Optional Suggestions:

A minute before the burger has fully cooked, add slices of cheddar cheese directly on the patty until melted.

Place the hamburger buns face down on the grill and toast for a couple of minutes.

3. Dress the cooked burger as desired, adding sliced onion, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, and/or condiments of choice.
